SAN ANTONIO – In a show of unity, Saturday night’s Pride Parade paid tribute to fallen Officer Miguel Moreno. Crowds paused to show their support as a wreath was placed in honor of Moreno.
The nine-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department was one of two officers shot Thursday while patrolling for vehicle burglaries.
Moreno and Officer Julio Cavazos made contact with two suspects, one of whom pulled a revolver and began shooting, police said.
One man made it his mission to show unity for the men and women behind the badge during the Pride Parade.
Joedy Yglesias said he’s proud of being part of the LGBTQ community and of being an active duty member of the military. He represented both as the leader of the parade’s color guard.
“There wasn't a plan to have one this year, so we went ahead and stepped in,” Yglesias said.
When Yglesias heard of the two officers gunned down just yards away from where the parade would pass, he decided to step up.
"I just couldn't reconcile going down this parade route celebrating, knowing what just happened there a couple days ago,” he said.
Yglesias proposed a brief display at North Main Avenue and East Evergreen Street — the intersection nearest to the shooting — placing a wreath for Moreno and playing “Taps.”
“I thought that was an appropriate and somber way to take a pause in the celebration to recognize the beautiful, heroic life that was lost,” Yglesias said.
It was his way of showing unity, healing and respect.
“To show that the LGBT community, our military service members and our law enforcement members all work together, all appreciate each other and all respect each other and what we do,” Yglesias said.
