SAN ANTONIO – A driver was arrested after he crashed his pickup truck into the side of a house on the city’s South Side, authorities said.
The pickup crashed into a bedroom where an elderly woman was fast asleep Sunday morning, her granddaughter said.
“My grandma hear, like, someone, like, a big, hard hit. When she got up, it was a truck that was in there,” said Consuelo Valenzuela, the woman’s granddaughter.
Police said the driver of the truck exited Highway 90 just after 8 a.m., lost control of his vehicle and ended up crashing into the side of the house on McKay.
Witnesses told police the man appeared to be speeding.
“We got scared. Everybody is a little bit crying because they are OK. Thank God they are OK,” Valenzuela said.
Valenzuela said she’s relieved and thankful. Just minutes before the crash, her grandfather had left the small house and gone to church. The impact of the crash threw her grandfather’s bed several feet during the crash.
“Imagine if my grandpa would have been there. Everything would have been on his side,” Valenzuela said.
The impact left the house unstable and firefighters had to place a temporary column for additional support.
“Everything is going to have to be replaced,” Valenzuela said.
The driver was arrested for outstanding traffic warrants. Investigators have not said if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
