Driver, passenger killed in Vance Jackson crash ID'd

Adriana Arteaga, Vicente Gonzalez died in head-on accident

SAN ANTONIO – The names of two people killed in a head-on crash on the Northwest Side were released late Wednesday.

Adriana Arteaga, 36, was killed when the Mercedes-Benz in which she was a passenger was hit by a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Vicente Gonzalez, 23.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. Monday at Vance Jackson Road near Loop 1604.

A police report cited three witnesses who said they were behind Gonzalez in the southbound lanes.

"All three witnesses stated (Gonzalez) suddenly steered left and jumped a curb that divides the southbound and northbound lanes of Vance Jackson," the report said. "As (Gonzalez's car) jumped the curb, (it) then drove across the two northbound lanes of Vance Jackson and jumped another curb. After (Gonzalez's car) jumped the second car, (it) drove across the sidewalk and began to travel south on the grass at a high rate of speed."

The report said witnesses saw Gonzalez in control and "not slumped over the steering wheel."

"It appeared (Gonzalez) was just looking straight as the vehicle continued to travel on the grass," the report said.

The witnesses told police Gonzalez drove back onto Vance Jackson going south in the northbound lane closest to the curb. That's where his car ran into the Mercedes-Benz.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz, 33-year-old Efrain Arteaga was hurt. Two children in that vehicle - Loretta, 7, and Savana Arteaga, 4 - were also hurt.

They were taken to University Hospital for their injuries.

There were no passengers in the Pontiac.

Police initially said a medical issue may have caused the accident, but have not said what that issue may have been.
