Fitness Apps Rank Texas No. 1 for Running

Fitness tracker data ranks Texas top for running fitness plans

SAN ANTONIO – Forty-seven percent of our workouts in Texas include running. That is according to fitness tracker apps like My Fitness Pal and Map My Fitness, which compiled their data online to give insight into how we stay in shape. California, Colorado and Washington were top in overall fitness, but Texas was the clear winner when it came to strapping on running shoes and hitting the road.

Also notable is our ranking as a city; a search of how we rank as a city takes you to a Daily Beast number study that put San Antonio in the top 10 for running. The study calculated that the average run in San Antonio was 7.44 miles per week. That put us ahead of San Diego and Chicago.

Trainers like Edgar Gonzales have been tracking the trend at his running supply store. We Run is one of 11 stores devoted exclusively to running apparel and tools in the San Antonio area. Gonzales said he's been fighting for the nation to begin recognizing our growing army of runners. "Yes, we do have an unhealthy lifestyle with the foods but we also like the fitness. I like to tell people we're fit, but we like to party," he laughed.

Gonzales said the expansion of running venues has had a huge impact, noting that McAllister Park and the Mission Reach are making outdoor fitness plans a lot easier to access. One of his devoted runners, Selena Hernandez, said braving the heat and humidity is worth it. "My health has been so much better.  I can't tell you the last time I went to the doctor for being sick," she said.

Her running partner agreed, "Since they made the trails I think a lot more people have been going out, whether they are biking or walking. I think they've made it a lot more accessible for everybody," said Roberta Gonzalez. She began running about six years ago and said she is surprised by the high ranking Texas received and is happy to be a part of it.

One event coming up for running enthusiasts as well as those who want to help fight brain cancer is KSAT's Head for the Cure. It will be Sept. 26 at the KSAT 12 Studio.
