Flooding concerns plague Medina Base Road project

Neighbors: Construction increasing flooding

SAN ANTONIO – Every time it rains, homeowners on a busy stretch of Medina Base Road near Loop 410 wonder how much of that rainwater will end up pooled around their houses.

The stretch of road, which is between Loop 410 and Five Palms Drive, has been under construction since October, 2010.  The project is designed to improve drainage, but Steve Boone, who lives in a subdivision near the construction, said it's currently doing the exact opposite.

"The water's just pooling up," said Boone.  "The drainage they put in doesn't seem to be doing a very effective job."

Roland Martinez, a spokesman for the City of San Antonio's Capital Improvement Management Services said the construction site does have a habit of collecting water, but that the contractor and city staff have taken steps to reduce the impact to surrounding neighborhoods.

"Once the work is completed, the drainage system will alleviate all that," Martinez said.

In the meantime, even small and moderate rainfalls send water into neighborhoods, Boone said.

"I'd definitely like them to step up their operations and get this thing fixed," said Boone.

Work on the project is scheduled to be completed by July, 2012.
