SAN ANTONIO – There was a split verdict Thursday afternoon in the trial of a former Bexar County detection officer accused of having sex with an inmate.
After deliberating for five hours Wednesday and an additional six hours Thursday, the judge declared a mistrial after the jury found Erick Montez not guilty on sexual-assault charges.

The panel did, however, find Montez, 36, guilty on charges of having an illegal sexual relationship with a person in custody.
He is facing a maximum punishment of two years in state jail.
His punishment will be decided by the judge during a hearing at a later date.

Montez was accused of coercing a female inmate to have sex while transferring her from one jail facility to another in December of 2015.
