Former SA judge, attorney sentenced to federal prison

Angus McGinty gets 2 years; Al Acevedo sentenced to 1 year

SAN ANTONIO – Angus McGinty, the former judge of the 144th District Court, was sentenced Wednesday to two years in federal prison in a judicial corruption case.

McGinty pleaded guilty in April under a plea agreement in return for the sentence. He could have gotten the maximum of 20 years.

The former judge was accused of seeking and taking bribes of cash, car repairs and other favors from attorney Al Acevedo (pictured, below) in exchange for favorable rulings for the lawyer's clients.

Acevedo also pleaded guilty in the case and was sentenced to 12 months and one day.

He will self-report to a federal prison, yet to be determined, on Nov. 2.

"I won't talk about the facts of the case because my lawyers don't want me to," McGinty said as he left the courthouse Wednesday. "But what I will say is thank you to everyone who's supported me."

McGinty stepped down from the bench in February 2014 amid an FBI investigation.

"There is no bribery and there is no dishonesty," Jay Norton, McGinty's lawyer said as he left the courthouse. "There is a lack of understanding about what goes on over there sometimes because of the volume of cases the state handles versus the volume the feds handle."
