SAN ANTONIO – University Hospital is facing some tough questions after one of its former employees kept his job, after being charged with a felony sex crime.
Investigators said back in April, Jaime Santos, 44, who worked as an emergency technician at the hospital, recorded a 12-year-old girl while she was in the bathroom without her permission. He is accused of then sending the recording out through the messenger app known as KIK, an arrest affidavit said.
Since then, investigators have charged Santos with crimes involving children; 16 counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of promotion of child pornography. Investigators believe Santos allegedly sent images or recordings of minors also through the KIK app.
According to the indictment, most of these incidents occurred while Santos was still working at University Hospital, but court papers did not specify where the alleged crimes happened.
KSAT reached out to the hospital to find out how Santos was still able to keep his job for more than a month and a half after being arrested for a sex crime and Elizabeth Allen, a senior public relations specialist released the following statement:
Santos cleared an extensive pre-employment background check. Employers do not have any way of knowing when a staff member is arrested unless they happen to see it or read about it in the news, or are notified as part of an investigation. We can tell you that did not happen in this case.
Allen also said the hospital does not have a written policy that requires employees to tell them if they've been arrested or charged with a crime.
Santos’ last day at University was June 18, 2017. He is currently out on bond awaiting trial.
