SAN ANTONIO – A man who was taken to a West Side HEB on Sunday after he was shot elsewhere apparently was not the victim of random violence, San Antonio police said.
Jeremy Rabago, 22, who later died from his injuries, knew his killer, police said.
"The victim was the intended victim, the intended target," police spokesman Officer Douglas Greene said.
Police arrested Matthew Zavala, 27, on a murder charge a few hours after the shooting. Greene said investigators developed leads about Zavala after talking to several witnesses.
Investigators found out about the shooting after someone brought Rabago to the HEB parking lot in the 800 block of Castroville Road around noon Sunday, seeking help for him.
An arrest warrant affidavit said that before the shooting, Rabago had gone to an apartment complex in the 1900 block of Jamar Street with a group of friends to visit someone there.
Two other men walked up, began acting in an aggressive manner and got into a fight with someone in Rabago's group, the affidavit said.
As the victim and his friends drove away, another car pulled up next to them. Someone in that car fired several shots over the top of the car, the affidavit said.
"General McMullen is a very busy street," Greene said. "So there easily could have been someone else injured."
It appears that Rabago was the only person hit by the gunfire. Greene said investigators believe that the shooter was aiming specifically at him.
Greene said detectives still have some unanswered questions about the case.
Zavala, who was arrested Sunday evening at his home, was booked into the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.
