SAN ANTONIO – H-E-B is now the largest single private employer in the state of Texas, surpassing the 100,000 employee mark, the San Antonio-based grocery giant announced Wednesday.

It’s one of the largest privately held retailers in the nation, employing more than 90,000 people — whom the company calls “partners” — in 332 Texas stores and more than 10,000 people in 56 stores throughout Mexico.

“This milestone represents our deep commitment to improving the lives of Texans and their families, and creating a work environment that brings the spirit of community to life every day while encouraging innovation, engagement and success,” said Craig Boyan, president and COO, in a statement.

Business Insider named H-E-B one of the best places to work in 2017. It wrote that the company operates more than 380 stores "in a number of formats, including superstores, supermarkets, and gourmet markets.”

In 2015, the company announced a plan for employees to become part owners. Stock grants are 3 percent of employee salaries, plus an additional $100 for every year they've worked at H-E-B. Over time, H-E-B anticipates its partners will own at least 15 percent of the company, a small token of gratitude for the hard work and dedication to service from its employees over the years, a company spokesman said at the time.

In 2017, the company plans to add nine new stores in Texas and six new stores in Mexico, pushing the total number of stores to near 400.
