Community leaders joined for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.
The family of the late homeowner and military veteran, Emerit Villarreal, were the first to experience the makeover. The family requested help with just fixing up a bedroom and bathroom, when Villareal’s wife broke her hip, but organizers realized much more needed to be done.
"The house was in bad enough shape it really needed to get torn down,” Kent Gerstner said.
The collaboration will focus on long-term home rebuilding projects for low-income residents and veterans.
Since 1994, Rebuilding Together San Antonio has repaired nearly 5,000 homes with the help of volunteers.
The Villareal family said they were thankful that their home was selected.
