HOUSTON – Pride Week is less than a week away and Houston officials have created a rainbow crosswalk to honor the LGBTQ community in Montrose.

Many Houstonians were thrilled and proud to see the brightly colored cross streets Saturday.

With the permission of the city and sponsoring of Houston Pride, the UP Art Studio designed and painted the intersection of Westheimer Road and Taft Street rainbow colors to match a memorial dedicated to a local man who was recently killed in an accident.

The crosswalk theme was managed and inspired by the request of friends of Alex Hill, 21, who was killed at the same intersection after a hit-and-run in January 2016.

“While this project was initially requested by friends of Alex Hill, the idea behind the crosswalk is to also honor the support and friendship many find in Houston’s LGBT community,” said Matthew Brollier, a crosswalk project facilitator. “The hope is that the crosswalk serves as a marker of encouragement to all Houstonians and visitors in recognizing the city as a welcoming place, open to all people, and one that celebrates its diversity, with a nod to the neighborhood’s place in Houston’s LGBT history.

"The organizers are grateful for the city’s approval and the generous support from Pride Houston to help bring this project to life. Hill’s friends join countless Houstonians in encouraging the city to improve safety conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers on its roadways.”

Houston Pride Festival will begin on Saturday in downtown at 901 Bagby St.
