Jury views video of dramatic shootout between suspect, deputy constables

Darnell Rogers accused of trying to kill deputies

SAN ANTONIO – The sights and sounds were chilling as a jury viewed a deputy constable's bodycam video of a shootout between Darnell Rogers, 24, and a trio of Precinct 4 deputy constables.

Rogers is on trial facing attempted capital murder charges following the Sept. 18, 2015 shooting in the 3800 block of East Southcross.

The deputies testified that they were responding to a shooting call when they themselves were suddenly in a shooting situation.

Deputy Tony Jones testified that Rogers was running toward them as they arrived at an apartment complex.

“He brought up the handgun in his right hand and stood there and aimed it,” Jones said.

“What was he aiming at, in your opinion?” prosecutor Julie Wright asked.

“One of the deputies. And that’s when I pulled the trigger,” Jones answered.

Rogers was seriously wounded and is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the shooting. He chose to serve as his own attorney during the trial, and he had the opportunity to personally cross-examine Jones, one of the deputies who shot him.

The trial will resume on Tuesday in Judge Kevin O’Connell’s 227th District Court.

If convicted, Rogers faces a punishment from five to 99 years to life in prison.
