SAN ANTONIO – A far West Side home was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning early Monday morning.
Firefighters were called out around 8:45 a.m. to a home at 5754 Pioneer Path in the Terraces at Alamo Ranch subdivision, where a person who lives at the home heard the lightning strike and called 911.
Bexar County 2 Fire Department Assistant Chief Trevor Wortes said the stormy weather made it difficult for firefighters to control the fire.
"There was lots of lightning, heavy rain, strong winds, he said."We have to put up ladders on top of the roof. Those are aluminum, which conducts electricity. At the time, the strong winds could knock it over. At the time, the heavy rain was causing the roof to be slick. So, yes, our personnel were having severe difficulty."
It took two hours and seven fire units to put out the fire, Wortes said.

Everything inside the attic of the home caught fire and the roof of the home collapsed.

As of 12 p.m. Monday, firefighters were still putting out hot spots.
No one was hurt.
A San Antonio Fire Department spokesman said four house fires in the city Monday were blamed on the weather.
