According to police, a witness saw a man walk into a store and steal items before getting into the passenger’s side door of a U-Haul van.

As the van started to drive off, the man who saw the shoplifting happen went to the passenger’s side door to try to stop the man from stealing, police said.

The 56-year-old witness fell from the side of the van and suffered injuries to his torso and lower extremities. He was taken to University Hospital in unknown condition.

Police said the van continued to drive off without stopping. Officers searched the area for the van but did not locate it.

Officer Alisia Pruneda, a public information officer for SAPD, said it appears there are two possible suspects.

It is unclear if the U-Haul was rented or stolen.

The case is under investigation.
