SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police have detained suspects in a kidnapping investigation after a car chase and brief manhunt on the West Side.
The incident began before 9:30 a.m. Thursday when a 23-year-old man was robbed and abducted at gunpoint in the 11200 block of U.S. Hwy 281. Police initially said the kidnapping happened at a motel.
An hour later, SAPD’s Eagle helicopter spotted a white, four-door car that matched the description of the vehicle used the abduction near Grissom Road and Culebra Road.
A preliminary report states that officers in the area approached the vehicle, but it then drove off. Officers backed off but trailed the vehicle following the directions from the helicopter.
Police said at one point the car was driving against traffic.
The helicopter followed the car to the 5000 block of Wiseman Boulevard, and at some point, the tires blew out.
Police initially said four people inside the car ran away after ditching the vehicle near an entrance to an apartment complex.
Officers were able to locate three of the occupants, however, a fourth person evaded authorities and ran into a wooded area. The man was located by police and taken into custody just before noon.
Police initially said the kidnapping victim also ran from officers. It is unclear why he evaded authorities and where he was found.
Firearms were found inside the car but it is unclear if anyone suffered any injuries.
The suspects and victim were taken to police headquarters for statements. The suspects’ names and ages have yet to be released.
This is a developing story. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
