Positivity rate drops, hospitalizations down
SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County’s COVID-19 positivity rate has dropped three points to 10.6% this week, and local leaders are crediting more testing to identify cases earlier.
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said during Tuesday night’s briefing that hospitalizations were slightly down when compared to last week. He said some COVID-19 warning indicators are slowly starting to move in the right direction, and more testing is helping people take action quicker.
“We’ve got to stay very vigilant right now,” Nirenberg said.

There were 191 new admissions to local hospitals within the last 24 hours, according to Nirenberg. He said 86% of patients in local hospitals are unvaccinated.
There are 27 children in area hospitals, the mayor said.
COVID-19 and schools
Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff says he’s still concerned about infections at schools after the Texas Supreme Court temporarily struck down the mask mandate for schools in the county. He thanked school districts that are still sticking by their mask mandates.
Vaccines progress
San Antonio Metro Health Director Claude Jacob said 67% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated. He said the county has made nominal progress in terms of vaccination, and Metro Health is ramping up more messaging.
“We’re not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination,” Jacob said.
Labor Day
With Labor Day weekend nearing, Nirenberg is asking people attending gatherings to plan ahead. He suggested meeting outdoors, packaging individual meals and masking up around others not in your household.
