Both drivers exited their vehicles and started to argue on the side of the highway, police said.

The driver of the Lexus got back into his vehicle and the driver of the Ram opened fire on the Lexus, police said.

He told police he opened fire in self-defense, as he believed the driver of the Lexus was trying to hit him with his vehicle, according to a police report.

The 45-year-old driver of the Lexus was hit in the upper body, police said. He ran on the shoulder of the highway and collapsed. He was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in stable condition.

The shooter, who police said was cooperating with officers at the scene, was taken to Public Safety Headquarters for questioning.

As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made and the case remains under investigation.
