24-year veteran of San Antonio Fire Department dies after battle with cancer

Shody Henshaw served as a training officer at the San Antonio Fire Training Academy, officials said.

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio fire lieutenant has died after a battle with occupational cancer, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

Shody Henshaw was a 24-year veteran of SAFD and his last assignment was at the San Antonio Fire Training Academy where he served as a training officer, officials said.

Following a long and “very courageous” battle with cancer, Lt. Henshaw passed away Friday evening, according to SAFD.

Lt. Henshaw joined the ranks of the fire department in April of 1998. His colleagues said he had a presence and personality “larger than life,” and was a friend to all that knew him.

“Our SAFD family extends our most sincere condolences and sympathy to the Henshaw family, and hope they all know that they will forever be a part of our family... We ask that you keep the Henshaw family in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time,” the department said in a statement.

Visitation and funeral arrangements are still pending at this time.
