Specht Elementary first grade teacher named KSAT’s Educator of the Month for February

Heather Sammis has been in education for nearly 20 years; this is her 4th year teaching

SAN ANTONIO – Heather Sammis has always been interested in education and, for the past four years, she’s been teaching and sharing that love of education with her young students.

Sammis is a first grade teacher at Specht Elementary in Comal ISD and recently, she was named KSAT’S Educator of the Month for February.

“They’re amazing. I love this age,” Sammis said. “This is all I’ve ever taught as an actual teacher and first grade is my jam. They’re the perfect age.”

Sammis said while this is her fourth year teaching, she has actually been involved in education for roughly 20 years.

“I have always been interested in education,” Sammis said. “In graduate school, I decided this is really what I wanted to be. And so I’ve had all different types of roles in school systems until I knew that we were retiring and I could be a certified teacher.”

It’s not just inside the classroom where Sammis is making an impact, it’s also outside the classroom. She brought the Girls on the Run Program to Specht Elementary.

“I first learned about Girls on the Run when we lived in Virginia,” Sammis said. “And, we didn’t have a Girls on the Run program. So, I wanted to bring it here because I think it’s a great opportunity. It’s not just about running, it’s really about teaching the girls a whole lot of different things and skills.”

Sammis said she was surprised and honored to be recognized as KSAT’s educator of the month.

“That means that my parents or whoever think very highly (of me) and that makes my heart grow. It’s very rewarding,” she said.
