Man, who is in his 50s, suffered critical injuries

SAN ANTONIO – For the second time this week, San Antonio police are investigating a crash involving a freight train and a pedestrian.

In the latest case, the man who was hit survived.

Officers who responded to the 911 call before 7 a.m. Thursday spoke with the train conductor who told them he saw a man standing on the tracks not far from W. Summit and Blanco Road.

The conductor told them he tried, but was not able to stop in time. The train hit the man.

Police searched the area where it happened and, initially, could not find the man.

They say they later found him in front of the train, which had stopped about 150 yards down the tracks.

The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance, with what police say were critical injuries.

This is at least the second incident this week involving a pedestrian and train.

Early Tuesday morning, police found another man dead on a Northeast Side railroad bridge, not far from Interstate 35 and Loop 410.

They said at the time that it appeared he had fallen asleep on the tracks, then got run over by a train.

In both cases, police described the people who were hit as being homeless.
