SAN ANTONIO – A popular real estate listing website conducted a survey that shows thousands of people are looking to potentially move to San Antonio.

Data from Redfin shows that there was a spike in searches for San Antonio homes from people living in Austin and Los Angeles.

The real estate site analyzed data from 2 million Redfin.com users and only included searches that would likely precede to an actual relocation or home purchase, according to the report.

“To be included in this dataset, a Redfin.com user must have viewed at least 10 homes in a particular metro area, and homes in that area must have made up at least 80% of the user’s searches,” the website states.

More than 6,300 Redfin users looked at the possibility of moving to San Antonio in the first quarter of 2022, based on the data.

That number is up from nearly 4,000 in the first quarter of 2021, Redfin data shows.

Redfin said a record 32% of users nationwide were looking to move to a different metro area in the first quarter of 2022. It’s only a slight bump up from last year but it’s significantly more than the 26% of users who were looking to make big moves in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Redfin associated skyrocketing home prices and rising mortgage rates with the spike in relocation searches to more affordable areas.

Despite the median home price for San Antonio exceeding $300,000 for the first time ever in 2021, it’s still more affordable than areas like Austin and Los Angeles.

A previous report from Redfin listed San Antonio as one of the top 10 most popular places to move to in 2021. San Antonio came in at No. 10 on Redfin’s list that combined Redfin home search data with U.S Census Bureau data.

The growth is expanding to San Antonio’s suburbs and nearby communities. Arizona-based Walton Global Holdings, a land management and real estate company, recently purchased 166 acres for a new home development in Seguin.
