The troopers must share their weight loss efforts, like cutting down on sugar and avoiding fast food, according to the newspaper.
Troopers who fail to trim down by December can be denied promotions and overtime or pulled from enforcement duties.
DPS has steadily increased fitness standards since 2010, according to the newspaper, as officials say it can be necessary when dealing with the public.
The requirement was met with criticism by the Texas Department of Public Safety Officers Association.
“DPS is continuing in its plan to harass, discipline, and even discharge outstanding officers for not meeting its physical fitness testing standards and appearance standards,” the organization said in a statement.
A DPS spokesperson said that potential changes to the program will be discussed at a Public Safety Commission meeting in August, according to the newspaper.
