SAN ANTONIO – Two men have been arrested after police say they attempted to steal materials from a construction site on the city’s Northeast Side early Thursday morning.

The incident began around 7:30 a.m. when a San Antonio police officer, being proactive, decided to sit and watch a construction site near Cataipa Street and Carnahan Street, where thieves had targeted previously.

According to police, the officer’s hunch worked out, as two men appeared and tried to steal wood from the site, but the officer was there and ready to take them into custody.

A neighbor not far from the scene said he had seen thieves at work at least three times recently, and that this time they had arrived earlier and realized the owner had put a padlock on the fence. He said they left and returned with bolt cutters.

SAPD said the suspects drove to the construction site in a stolen truck. It is unclear where it was taken from.

Construction workers tell KSAT 12 that the theft attempts aren’t surprising, considering how expensive lumber is right now.

The name and ages of the two men arrested have not been released.
