Police initially received a report of a person lying along the road. When officers arrived, they found a man who was passed out and seemed to be intoxicated.

They checked to see if the man, later identified as Matthew Long, 23, was okay and responsive. Eventually, he woke up but became “aggressive” as he started walking in the road, police said.

Officers tried to detain Long to “keep him from endangering himself,” but the situation escalated, according to authorities.

Long punched an officer in the face and kicked the others while resisting arrest.

Two officers were injured in the struggle -- one of them had a fractured hand.

Long is charged with two counts of assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest. He is currently being held in the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.
