The 2022 midterm election date is Nov. 8 and if you want to cast your ballot, you’ll need to be sure you’re registered to vote.

This election year is an important one with all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and a third of the U.S. Senate seats up for grabs, as well as a chance to vote in the Texas governor’s race and elect Bexar County’s first new county judge in 20 years.

Early voting begins Oct. 24 in Texas for the midterm elections.

Any U.S. citizen who is 18 by Election Day on Nov. 8 AND registered to vote by the Oct. 11 voter registration deadline can vote, with few exceptions prohibited by law.

How to register to vote if you’re not already registered

  1. You can fill out a voter registration application online. You will need to print it out and mail it to the voter registrar in your county of residence.
  2. You can also register in person at your county voter registration office. The Bexar County Elections office is located at 1103 S. Frio, Suite 100. If you live in a county other than Bexar, you can find out where to register in person here.
  3. Or, you can request a postage-paid application from your voter registrar by filling out this form.

What to do if you lost your voter registration card

If you are registered, but you’ve lost your voter registration card, you can notify your county voter registrar in writing to get a new one.


What ID do you need to vote in Texas?

You won’t need your voter registration card when you vote, but you will need a valid form of identification to vote in Texas.

Here is a list of the acceptable forms of photo ID, bring one to the polling place when you cast your ballot:

  • Texas Driver License issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
  • Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
  • United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Passport (book or card)

Early voting starts on Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 4, or you can vote on the day of the primary elections on Nov. 8.

Dates & Deadlines for Tuesday, November 8, 2022, General Election

  • Tuesday, October 11 - Last day to register to vote
  • Monday, October 24 - First day of early voting
  • Friday, October 28 - Last day to apply for a ballot by mail (Must be received, not postmarked by this date.)
  • Friday, November 4 - Last day of early voting
  • Tuesday, November 8 - Election Day. Absentee/mail-in ballots must be postmarked or delivered by hand by 7 p.m. Ballots from overseas voters must be received by the fifth day after Election Day. Ballots from members of the armed forces must be received by the sixth day after election day.
