Speed likely cause of crash that killed driver and passenger, police say

Car hit pole under highway flyover, caught fire

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police say a driver who was killed in an early morning crash along with his passenger was speeding just before he lost control of the vehicle.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. Thursday on the Loop 410 access road near Highway 151, causing the car to burst into flames.

A preliminary police report says officers who came upon the scene initially thought it was a simple car fire.

However, they quickly realized that two people were trapped inside the burning car.

The report says that with help from bystanders, officers were able to pull both out from the vehicle.

They say the woman, who was the passenger, died at the scene.

The man, who police say was the driver of the car, was taken to a hospital where he later died.

They say it appears he was speeding when he hit a curb and lost control of the car.

It then ran up and embankment and slammed into a pole beneath the highway flyover.

As of late Thursday morning, police had not released the names of the people who were killed.

They say both appeared to be in their early 20s.
