Ice on elevated roads causes pileup crashes on Northeast Side

Several intersections near Lookout Road had black ice, car pileups

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police, EMS and city brine trucks had their hands full on Tuesday morning with ice causing crashes on elevated roads on the city’s Northeast Side.

Ice began to form on area bridges just before 6 am.

One of the first closures happening at Judson Road over Lookout Road, where police closed Judson Road in both directions for black ice at the top of the bridge.

Not too far from that area, where Lookout Road turns into North Weidner at O’Connor Road, a crash involving several vehicles occurred thanks to ice on elevated areas.

Also on the Northeast Side, an even bigger pileup that closed Loop 1604 westbound and eastbound access road lanes also near Lookout Road just past Rolling Oaks Mall right before where Loop 1604 hits I-35.

It took police, tow trucks and city brine trucks several hours to clean up the mess before it re-opened the area.

More freezing rain however, is expected, mainly along and north of Highway 1604, through Wednesday. Some significant ice accumulation is possible in the Hill Country.
