Homicide detectives start workday investigating two separate overnight murder cases

18-year-old Paul Ortiz, Jr.; 20 year old man both dead from gunshot wounds

SAN ANTONIO – Before the workday started for most people, San Antonio homicide investigators already had two new murder cases on their hands.

Two men were killed in separate shootings that happened between late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

According to a preliminary report, a man identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office as Paul Joseph Ortiz, Jr., 18, was brought to an emergency clinic in the 700 block of W. Loop 1604 N., around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers at the clinic said he had been shot in the head and died from his wound.

The report says police determined he had been shot at another location, the 8000 block of Meadow Leaf.

It says Ortiz was sitting in the back seat of a car when another man walked up, spoke to someone else in the vehicle, then shot Ortiz.

The shooting happened at some point after Ortiz left a car club show in the area, the report said.

A few hours later, around 1 a.m. Monday, officers who were investigating reports of gunshots in the 2400 block of S. Calaveras, found another man shot to death.

The shooting scene appeared to be the same area where they found him, at the San Juan Square apartments.

The medical examiner is still working to confirm the identity of the victim, who is believed to be 20 years old.

So far, police have not made arrests in either case.
