According to an arrest warrant affidavit, SAPD noticed that brass bullet shells were taken from an unnamed SAPD property on March 3. The shells had been left in baskets, but those baskets were missing.
Police said several other thefts took place thereafter.
When officers went to metal recycling businesses to investigate the thefts, they learned that Mchazlett sold 41 pounds of brass shells on Wednesday morning, the affidavit states.
Police said the brass shells were the same brand and caliber primarily used by the SAPD. They included several simulation shells used for training.
Officers also found pieces of rubber berm trap that the SAPD uses to stop bullets.
Mchazlett was arrested on unrelated warrants and later confessed to the theft, the affidavit states.
The affidavit did not state which facility the shells were stolen from.
A warrant for his arrest was issued on Wednesday and he was booked into the Bexar County Jail. He is also facing previous, unrelated charges of theft, drug possession, burglary and evading arrest.
His bond is set at $100,000.
