Neighbors outraged by apartment complex shooting that left 2 wounded, including 6-year-old boy

Both victims recovering from wounds, police say

SAN ANTONIO – People who live at an apartment complex where two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were wounded in an apparent drive-by shooting said they are outraged by the violence.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Thursday night in the pool area of the apartment complex located in the 5800 block of Medina Base Road.

San Antonio police said someone in a car took aim at two men, one seated in the car and the other standing nearby, just outside the pool.

One of them, a 23-year-old, was wounded in his leg.

The 6-year-old boy, who was inside the pool area, was struck in his foot.

“Who fires toward babies? That’s somebody that has no heart, doesn’t care about life,” said Carla Noble, who has lived at the complex for the past 10 years.

Noble said the child is like a member of her family and someone who she sees almost every day.

“It just hurt me to hear that he was hurt in this crossfire,” she said. “What bothers me is that people these days are so quick to pick up a gun.”

Both victims were still being treated at a hospital as of Friday morning, police said.

Another resident, Juan Serna, said he feared for his life during the height of the shooting.

“It was crazy,” Serna said. “I heard it. That’s what made me come outside.”

Serna said he managed to dive toward the ground just as someone fired a second round of gunfire.

He lives not far from the pool area, but after what happened, Serna said he has no plans to allow his children there anymore.

Serna was one of several people who took advantage of a free food giveaway at the apartment complex Friday morning.

The event, which was organized by Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia, was already scheduled prior to the shooting.

“It’s very unfortunate that this happened,” the councilwoman said, when asked about the previous night’s violence. “It’s a reminder for everyone that there’s a lot of violence right now. Please be watchful.”

Rocha Garcia also emphasized that people should take action by reporting any suspicious activity to police or other authorities.
