Recall roundup: Best Buy pressure cookers, baby activity centers sold at Walmart recalled

CDC investigating recalled diced onions amid salmonella outbreak

SAN ANTONIO – Best Buy is recalling nearly a million pressure cookers after reports of people suffering severe burns.

The volume markings on the inner pot of the Insignia pressure cookers are incorrect, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission notice. People can then unknowingly overfill the pot, and hot food and liquid can shoot out of it when the pressure cooker is vented using the quick-release method or opened while its contents are pressurized.

There have been 31 reports of that happening, including 17 reports of burn injuries, some of which were second-degree and severe burns.

This recall involves Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers with model numbers NS-MC60SS8, NS-MC60SS9, or NS-MC80SS9. Six-quart and eight-quart models are included.

Inner cooker pots with model numbers NS-MCRP6NS9 and NS-MCRP6SS9, sold separately as replacements, are also included.

Owners can contact Best Buy to get replacement parts.

Baby activity centers recalled

More than 115,000 children’s activity centers sold at Walmart are recalled after reports of children getting hurt.

Dorel Juvenile Group recalled Cosco Jump, Spin & Play Activity Centers.

The straps can detach or break, and a child can fall and be injured. They were sold from December 2020 through October 2023.

The model numbers are WA105FZW and WA105GML, and they come in pink and blue.

According to Dorel, a similar model, WA105HCM — which has an additional black safety strap on one of the bungee straps — is not part of the recall. Labels with model numbers can be found underneath the seat.

Owners can contact Dorel for a replacement. Affected consumers may also register recalled products at www.coscokids.com/registration to start the recall remedy process.

Diced onion alert

Diced onions are linked to a salmonella outbreak that has made people sick in 22 states, including Texas, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 73 illnesses have been reported, including 15 hospitalizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection issued an alert for certain diced onion products from Gills Onions linked to the outbreak, and the company has issued a voluntary recall.

Products include some lots of diced yellow onions (3-pound bags and 8-ounce cups), diced celery and onions (8-ounce cups), diced mirepoix (10-ounce cups) and diced red onions (8-ounce cups).

They were sold to food service institutions, including nursing homes, nationwide and to retailers in the far western United States.

The CDC continues to investigate the outbreak.

Symptoms of a salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that can start within hours or days of consuming the bacteria.
