SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio has received a $8 million grant to improve the overall safety of Culebra Road, according to a press release.
The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant Program.

The release said the funding would advance planning to make the five-mile-long corridor safer for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
“This is great news for the people who drive, cycle, and walk along Culebra,” said District 6 Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda, whose district contains more than 60 percent of the road. “Culebra is one of the most dangerous streets in the city and making the road safer has been a top priority.”
Some potential upgrades to Culebra Road include protected sidewalks, bike facilities, trees, upgraded transit facilities, crosswalks, and intersections.
“Over the last decade, there have been more than 50 fatal crashes along Culebra Road, making it the most dangerous road in San Antonio,” Congressman Joaquin Castro said.
“This $8 million investment from the Biden-Harris administration will kickstart a much-needed transformation to make Culebra Road safer for the thousands of people who rely on it every day. My office was honored to work with the City of San Antonio to make the case for our RAISE Grant proposal, and I look forward to seeing this project move forward as soon as possible,” said Castro.
DPS approved funding to 148 RAISE grant recipients across the country, and the Culebra Road Project was one of four Texas projects selected, the release said.
According to the release, the cost of pre-construction is around $11 million, and the city is granting $3 million in matching funds, allocated as part of an $18 million Culebra Road 2022 bond project.
