Man ‘acting erratically’ dies in SAPD custody

Witnesses say man was running around a store in his underwear

SAN ANTONIO – A 45-year-old man who San Antonio police said was “acting erratically” died in police custody Thursday night.

According to a preliminary police report, officers were called to a store in the 5100 Block of South Flores Street around 8:30 p.m. for an assault in progress involving a man “running around the store in his underwear.”

Some people at the store tried to get the man under control but were unsuccessful, the report said.

An officer arrived at the store and struggled with the man before placing him in handcuffs, the report said.

Moments later, the man’s body went limp, and the officer immediately removed the handcuffs and performed life-saving measures, which included the administering of NARCAN, the report said. EMS arrived and continued life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
