Firefighters battled large blaze at Spa Crafters warehouse on North Side

No one was injured in the fire; dense black smoke could be seen from Spring Branch to the South Side

SAN ANTONIO – Authorities are investigating the cause of a large fire at a hob tub store on the North Side, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

The fire sparked around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Spa Crafters in the 2600 block of North Loop 1604 East.

The first arriving crews found heavy fire coming from the warehouse area, which SAFD public information officer Joe Arrington said is located toward the back end of the building.

Arrington said the burning of a combination of materials, including plastic and fiberglass, inside the warehouse area caused the dense black smoke seen as far north as Spring Branch down to the city’s South Side.

After one hour of battling the flames, Arrington said firefighters contained the fire in the warehouse area of the building. SAFD supplied a sprinkler system inside the building to keep the fire from spreading further.

SAFD said multiple vehicles behind the building caught fire. The burning vehicles contributed to the thick, black smoke seen around San Antonio.

The majority of damage from the fire was to storage and shipping containers outside of the building, Arrington said. The building was moderately damaged from the flames.

Following the fire, Arrington said there have not been any reports of breathing issues in the remote area.

San Antonio police officers cleared out the street in a neighborhood behind the warehouse as a precaution. Arrington said they wanted to make sure people made it out safely.

Fire crews will be on the scene for several more hours as they extinguish hot spots.

Arrington said no one was injured during the fire. A Hazmat truck also responded to the scene for precautionary reasons due to the size of the fire.

Hazmat crews have not found runoff of any harsh chemicals in the area, Arrington said.

The Loop 1604 eastbound access road between Gold Canyon Road and Redland Road was closed for several hours because of the fire.
