Off-duty SAPD sergeant arrested on family assault charge

SAN ANTONIO – An off-duty San Antonio police sergeant was arrested Sunday on a charge of family assault, according to the department.

Deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance around 8:25 a.m. Saturday in the 1500 block of Gelding Heights.

A woman told deputies that her husband, SAPD Sgt. Michael Guzman, grabbed her by the shoulder while trying to take car keys from her, according to the sheriff’s office.

Guzman left the property afterward with their children. BCSO said the physical altercation caused the woman pain.

Investigators noticed swelling on the woman’s face, although she was unsure how the injury happened, BCSO stated.

Guzman, 47, was charged with assault bodily injury-family member, records with the Bexar County Jail show.

Guzman is a 23-year veteran with SAPD and is assigned to the bike patrol unit.

SAPD said he will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of criminal and administrative investigations.
