SAN ANTONIO – Christmas is just a few weeks away, and it should be a time of joy and cheer. But that expectation of perfection can bring anxiety and stress to some parents.
Dr. Anne-Kathrin Eiselt with Teladoc Health said everyone handles stress differently, but there are a few signs that can raise red flags. Those include a feeling of anxiety, irritability, increased heart rate, blood pressure, or tension, which are signs of a state of chronic stress.
It’s important to take some time to care for yourself.
“Finding small, intentional moments for yourself can make a big difference, and it really starts by starting small. Even just five minutes of quiet time can help reduce that stress,” Eiselt said.
Consider letting a friend or family member care for your kids for 30 minutes.
“The key is to let go of guilt and recognize that taking care of yourself is an essential part of showing up for the family,” Eiselt said.
When it comes to financial stress, taper expectations. Think about what is important to your family traditions.
It’s not about material things; it’s about feelings and emotions that bring us joy.
“One thing that is really important to remember is that children learn from observing us. Right? They observe how we show up, how we deal with the stress, what we make a priority,” Eiselt said.
