SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man accused of capital murder in 2023 is heading to trial, but the victim’s families have expressed concerns following a previous outburst in court.
Lazerith Carrillo, now 20, is accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, Alyssa Perez, 25, and her friend, Edward Acosta Jimenez, 32, on the city’s Northwest Side.
Carrillo was 18 at the time of the shooting.
Aimee Perez, the mother of Perez, continues to grieve the loss of her oldest daughter.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, on Jan. 27, 2023, Jimenez’s mother discovered her son and Perez killed in a car parked outside her home.
Hours after the discovery, police arrested Carrillo, who was attempting to carjack a person. He was allegedly found with Perez’s cellphone. Police also said the gun he possessed matched shell casings found at the murder scene.
During a November hearing for Carrillo, he caused a disturbance by yelling and admitting to the crime while waiting for his case to be called.
“There was a lot of emotions,” Aimee Perez said. “I personally (sic) because he called my name and was apologizing to me. That was the outburst. I got very emotional. I started crying.”
The Perez family expected Carrillo to plead guilty, but he opted to go to trial, which is scheduled for April 7, 2025.
“That’s something we are going to relive again,” Aimee Perez said. “And don’t get me wrong, I go through this every day. I have my days and live through it every day.”
Jury selection is set for the same date — April 7, 2025 — with testimony to begin on the following day. If Carrillo is found guilty, he will automatically be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
