Man delaying traffic on North Side dies after medical episode, SAPD says

Police say an officer deployed their Taser but did not confirm if the Taser hit the man

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said a man who delayed traffic died after a medical episode on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened around noon at the intersection of the Northeast Loop 410 access road and Starcrest Drive.

An SAPD sergeant told KSAT that an officer made contact with a man near a bridge who interfered with traffic. The responding officer tried to move the man away from passing vehicles, the sergeant said.

For an unknown amount of time, police said a passerby noticed the officer needed assistance, so they called 9-1-1.

The additional officers who responded to the scene prompted San Antonio police to shut the intersection.

During the incident, the SAPD sergeant said the first officer grabbed and used their Taser. However, SAPD could not confirm whether or not the Taser hit the man.

The sergeant said the man suffered a medical episode and was later pronounced dead. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the man’s official cause of death.

It is unclear if the man was being combative with the officer or under arrest, or why the officer deployed their Taser.

The officer was not injured.

SAPD said there is no additional threat to the public.
