SAN ANTONIO – A man who delayed traffic and punched an officer in the face during an altercation on the North Side died in police custody, according to a preliminary report from SAPD.
The incident happened around noon Sunday at the Northeast Loop 410 access road and Starcrest Drive intersection.
The man was walking in and out of traffic while attempting to open the doors of nearby vehicles, according to a report from SAPD.
A sergeant at the scene told KSAT that the officer tried to move the man away from passing vehicles.
The report states the officer activated his lights and the man began to walk away.
The officer tried to detain the man but he resisted and began punching the officer in the face, the report said.
During the altercation, the man attempted to grab the officer’s weapon, police said. The officer used his Taser on the man, according to the report.
After other officers arrived, the man was taken into custody; however, at some point, the man stopped breathing.
Officers and EMS officials gave the man CPR, but he died at the hospital, the report said.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the man’s official cause of death and name.
The officer sustained minor injuries, police said.
The man’s age and name are unknown as of Monday morning.
SAPD said their investigation is ongoing.
