SAISD Board of Trustees approve renewal for 18 in-district charter schools

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Independent School District trustees will return to the discussion of a potential land swap deal for a downtown baseball stadium in a meeting Monday afternoon.

The trustee’s meeting follows a back-and-forth between the district, Bexar County and the San Antonio Missions revolving around a 2.3-acre parking lot on Camaron Street that sits in the proposed footprint of a $160 million minor-league baseball stadium.

Trustees last met on Nov. 18 to discuss the district’s terms for selling the land to Designated Bidders — the ownership group of the San Diego Padres’ AA-affiliate — as well as to Weston Urban, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.

The board unanimously agreed to a hefty set of terms it presented to Designated Bidders, Weston Urban, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Those terms included:

  • Funding for a $45 million building for the Advanced Learning Academy
  • Guarantee at least 1,250 affordable housing units built within the district
  • Construction of a new parking garage at the northern corner of the proposed stadium site
  • $400,000 per year to make up for not opening up the property to a competitive sale
  • Spots on the Houston Street Tax Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) Board

It is unclear if the district received an offer, but it is expected Monday’s discussion will cover the topic.

The board had previously given a Dec. 9 deadline for all parties to respond.
