WINDCREST, Texas – With a population of under 6,000, the City of Windcrest is roughly two square miles wide.

To the east, the city borders Converse. San Antonio borders the rest.

The city’s annual budget is approximately $10 million. According to Windcrest Mayor Dan Reese, approximately 200 businesses are operating in the city.

“Our business footprint primarily is along Walzem Road. And then, we have a business presence over on the access road on Interstate 35. And then, of course, over by where what people would refer to as Rackspace.” Reese said. “It was Windsor Park Mall and then it’s Rackspace. And now, it’s Windcrest International Business Park.”

During a 2017 agreement, the city expanded its boundary to include the area along Interstate 35 from Walzem Road to Eisenhauer Road. The master plan set to be introduced next year will include the expansion of that area, which is mostly warehouses and businesses.

“Part of what we envision is developing part of the commercial part of that area because we are landlocked,” Reese said. “And so, our capabilities to build is somewhat limited.”

Part of that development will also include putting up more signs to help the city stand out and developing the small community into a destination place beyond the holiday season.

Reese said there are no plans to annex any more land into the city. The community is happy with the size it is currently.

“People love living in the City of Windcrest. It’s a great place to be,” Reese said. “It’s been called sort of a diamond here. It’s a great location.”
