Del Rio police said they found the man dead with multiple injuries to his body during a welfare check at his home in the 1100 block of Avenue K near U.S. Highway 90.
Detectives discovered the victim had recently allowed a relative, Arreola, to live with him. Arreola was not at the scene, nor was the victim’s vehicle.
That vehicle was found abandoned in Leon Valley on Dec. 13. The car was then taken back to Del Rio for processing, police said.
Detectives obtained two arrest warrants against Arreola on charges of theft of property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
He was arrested in Leon Valley on Sunday on a separate case, and was charged with burglary of a habitation and failure to identify himself, police said.
Arreola was booked into the Bexar County Jail.
On Tuesday, detectives searched the victim’s vehicle and found the suspected weapon used in the crime, described as a machete, police said.
Authorities then issued an arrest warrant for murder against Arreola.
