According to Gabriela Gomez, a gunnery sergeant, and spokesperson for the organization, they are distributing toys to 4,500 families and 16,000 children in counties and school districts across San Antonio and its surrounding counties.
“It’s not just the Marines. What we’ve done this season is we’ve joined forces with, basically, every branch of service to assist. So that’s the biggest piece about what we’ve decided to do this year is embrace that we are Military City, USA,” Gomez said.
Gomez said that the most important thing is planting a seed of happiness in a child, no matter where toys or donations come from.
“That’s what means the most to us,” she said.
According to their website, almost all donations are focused on the community, with just 2.3 percent going to fundraising for the cause and 0.6 percent to operations.
“Everything that we do is for the community, so the more involvement that we get, the better it is for the community,” Gomez said.
