It can be very mindful of Texans to Google search the definition of a word or explanation of a trend.

As 2024 comes to a close, here are the most searched slang words and phrases in Texas, according to Google Trends and other data analysis websites.

1. Demure: reserved, modest and shy in manner or appearance.

The trend came from TikTok user Jools Lebron for making a series of viral videos using the phrase “very demure.” The word was named Dictionary.com’s 2024 word of the year.

2. Hawk tuah: imitative of a spitting sound.

The catchphrase originates from a viral street interview conducted in June 2024 with Haliey Welch.

3. Angel numbers: a number sequence that contains a repeated number series.

444 and 222 were the most searched in Texas.

4. DEI: diversity, equity and inclusion.

An acronym used to describe policies and programs that promote the representation and participation of different individual groups.

5. Sigma: refers to an independent, self-reliant person who operates outside traditional social hierarchies. Often compared to a “lone wolf.”

6. Skibidi: refers to a viral internet trend featuring surreal, animated videos of singing toilets and dancing heads. This trend is popular on social media platforms like TikTok.

7. Schmaltz: refers to excessive sentimentality or melodrama. Schmaltz is often used for art, movies, music or storytelling if there is too much sappiness.

8. Katz: a term for anything enjoyable, fun or pleasing. It can also mean “yes.”

9. Sen: slang for self.

10. Aura: slang for the vibe someone gives off. When someone has an aura, they are cool and have good energy or a good personality.
