An arrest warrant affidavit states that Goynes shot Tomas Calavera Jr., 30, who was found dead during a welfare check on Monday afternoon at a home in the 14000 block of Gunsight Pass in west Bexar County.

The affidavit states Calavera’s father received a call from the Bandera County Sheriff’s Office, which informed him that Calhoun County was requesting a welfare check for his son.

The man went to Calavera’s home on Gunsight Pass but did not locate him inside. BCSO deputies later arrived to search the home and found Calavera dead in a closet, the affidavit said.

Deputies said he had been shot in the face.

BCSO told KSAT that Calavera was Goynes‘ common-law husband.

Calhoun County deputies began their investigation into Goynes when she set fire to a 2024 GMC pickup truck in Port O’Connor, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit states the truck had significant damage to its interior, and a yellow gas can and lighter were found behind the vehicle.

A witness reported seeing a woman, later identified as Goynes, extinguishing herself while walking away from the truck, the affidavit states.

Deputies and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officer located Goynes as she paddled away in a kayak, according to the affidavit.

Goynes had severe burn marks on her right hand and was in possession of Calavera’s identification information, deputies said.

Calhoun County officials found that the truck also belonged to Calavera.

According to the affidavit, Goynes told a Calhoun County deputy that she shot him, took his truck and burned it.

Calhoun County records show she was taken into custody on Monday. Port O’Connor is located about 150 miles southeast of San Antonio and about an hour southeast of Victoria.

The affidavit and BCSO did not say if Goynes has a connection with Port O’Connor or Calhoun County.
