Home for the holidays? Tourists say they’d rather be in downtown San Antonio

Tourists flock to River Walk for holiday celebrations

SAN ANTONIO – It’s hard to tell what was shining brighter downtown on Christmas Day: the River Walk lights or Amparo Lozano’s shirt.

“What does Christmas mean to you?” KSAT reporter Avery Everett asked.

“Everything,” Lozano, a tourist, said. “I love Christmas. Look at my earrings!”

And she’s not the only one spreading holiday cheer here.

“It’s beautiful. The River Walk is beautiful. We don’t have anything like that in Houston,” a woman named Monica said. “I come here every year.”

These women were just two of thousands celebrating Christmas Day in the heart of San Antonio — a city brimming with spirit and adorned to reflect it.

Business owners like Luis Davila say these tourists are the reason he works on Christmas Day.

“I’m very positive and optimistic,” said Davila, the owner of Ice Cream on Wheels.

Davila said he usually sees a surge in customers during the holidays in downtown San Antonio. For nearly a decade, he’s been pushing his cart full of ice cream and paletas near popular tourist sights.

Davila said he can’t imagine spending Christmas any other way.

“I like what I do,” Davila said.
