2 teens charged after pursuit, police shooting on North Side

SAPD: One suspect is accused in shooting that left man paralyzed

SAN ANTONIO – Two teenagers are facing charges following a pursuit-turned-police shooting on Tuesday on the North Side.

Damion Tremayne Holmes, who was shot by a San Antonio police detective when he brandished a handgun, was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, according to an updated report from SAPD. Police said Holmes had an active warrant for aggravated assault stemming from a Dec. 9 incident that left a man paralyzed.

Esquire Pettit, 18, was arrested on three active felony warrants, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated robbery, police said.

An SAPD Street Crimes Unit had been conducting surveillance on Holmes and Pettit at an apartment in the 100 block of Melrose Place on Tuesday.

At some point, police said the men left the apartment and went to a nearby store, which SAPD Chief William McManus said was an H-E-B.

The men left the H-E-B, and when officers attempted to apprehend them, Pettit was detained and Holmes ran off, the report states.

During a short foot chase, Holmes “produced” a handgun, and a detective fired at him, striking him, police said.

The report does not state if Holmes pointed the gun at the detective or fired it.

Holmes was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the report said.

The detective who shot him is a 22-year veteran. He will be placed on administrative duty until further notice.

No officers or bystanders were injured.

The SAPD Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate, concurrent investigations, and their findings will be reviewed by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

Holmes accused in shooting that left man paralyzed

An affidavit obtained by KSAT revealed that a 50-year-old man and his father were leaving their home when Holmes, who was standing across the street, approached a stolen vehicle and displayed a gun.

San Antonio police said Holmes fired toward the 50-year-old in his driveway. The man and his father ran for cover, but the man was shot in his back, police said.

Holmes fled the location and was not found.

The man was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with paralysis from the waist down, according to authorities.

During their investigation, police found social media images of Holmes posing with multiple firearms and evidence that he had communicated with someone else about the shooting, the affidavit states.

The victim’s father provided a description of Holmes wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the shooting. This was corroborated by the surveillance footage and by a witness who had been with Holmes that night. The witness stated that Holmes was given a gun to act as a lookout during carjackings, according to the affidavit.
