Henry Cisneros - Former HUD secretary and San Antonio mayor
“President Jimmy Carter was an amazing person who always remained deeply faithful to the causes he believed in. I first got to know the President as HUD Secretary and later through our mutual work with Habitat for Humanity, where I served as Vice Chair of Habitat for Humanity’s global efforts.
“Habitat had never asked for federal money, but after his term in office, President Carter became the principal leader identified with Habitat and dedicated a huge part of his life to the organization. He helped Habitat identify a way they could use federal dollars to purchase land so that Habitat homes could be built in more desirable locations.
“I learned that he was tireless in his advocacy and wouldn’t rest until something was completed. While I was HUD Secretary, he called on a matter related to Habitat, which I advised would be quite a challenge. His response was: Mr. Secretary, I know you can do it. Years later I was working one-on-one with him at a Habitat build on the back porch of a Habitat home. He noticed I was having difficulty nailing footsteps together and he said: Mr. Secretary, it’s obviously been a number of years since you’ve done this, so let me show you how I do it.
“President Carter was a true leader. I was proud to know him and see firsthand the tremendous impact he had on my life and countless others.”
