New Year’s Day shooting marks San Antonio’s first homicide of the year

Wednesday’s homicide victim identified as Jason Huizar, 32

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said a deadly shooting that happened in broad daylight on New Year’s Day is the city’s first homicide of the year.

A man, later identified as Jason Huizar, 32, was found Wednesday afternoon, suffering from gunshot wounds in the middle of Paso Chico Alley, not far from Frio City Road and Brazos Street.

Police said he died soon after the shooting, which happened around 3 p.m.

One man who spoke to KSAT 12 News anonymously Thursday morning said he knew Huizar personally and was surprised that he was shot, especially in broad daylight.

The witness said the gunfire erupted during a heated argument between Huizar and another man.

“(The suspect) told him not to disrespect him, you know?,” the witness said. “(Huizar said) something he didn’t like obviously, and then he just shot him in the chest.”

According to a preliminary police report, witnesses were able to give officers a description of the shooter. Then they quickly tracked down someone who matched the description.

However, as of Thursday morning, that person was being held on an unrelated warrant and had not been charged in connection with the deadly shooting, the report said.

Huizar’s New Year’s Day homicide comes on the heels of a year when homicides appeared to be continuing a decline in San Antonio.

A spokesman for SAPD said there had been at least 137 homicide cases in 2024, pending data for December which is still being finalized.

In 2023, there were 165 cases in San Antonio. Three years ago, there were 231 homicides citywide.
