SAN ANTONIO – Thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into the San Antonio River on the South Side following a mechanical failure at a San Antonio Water Systems treatment plant.

SAWS estimated that more than 100,000 gallons of domestic wastewater spilled around 7:15 p.m. Sunday from the Steven M. Clouse Water Recycling Center, located at 3495 Valley Road, according to a news release.

From that amount, about 20,000 gallons spilled into the river, spokeswoman Anne Hayden told KSAT on Monday. The sewage diluted out, Hayden said.

A mechanical issue caused the spill, the release stated.

SAWS notified the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and issued a public notice “out of an abundance of caution,” the release stated.

“The situation has been resolved; the vast majority of the spill stayed on site and has been cleaned up, but we were still required to report it, “Hayden said. “We’ve been working with TCEQ and SARA today to check downstream for any damage. It all seems to be okay.”
